In 2002, Exact
Packaging, Inc. occupied a leased facility that would soon be up
for sale. Upon the passing of the company’s founder and
co-owner, Jim Vonderhorst in August of 2002, Linda Fulginiti thought
the business had two to three years to identify the company’s
direction regarding expansion of product lines, where the best location
would be for the future business, and whether to continue to lease
or to build their own facility. Based on a recommendation, Linda
called YCEDC to learn of available economic development financing
options.
Relocation
plans were accelerated in winter of 2003 when the roof collapsed
from heavy snow. This prompted a call to Kenetha Hansen, Vice President
of Community and Economic Development, to let her know the company’s
expansion plan would have to be accomplished in months instead of
years.
After the collapse
of the roof, EPI moved their operations to the corner of Tyler Run
and Queen Street for about a year while its new facility in the
Stonebridge Industrial Park in New Freedom was under construction.
YCEDC administered
a $600,000 Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority loan and
$1.1 million in tax-exempt financing via the York County Economic
Development Corporation and York County Industrial Development Authority
respectively. This competitive financing package created a
below market rate for the $2m+ project.
The company
was started in 1980 with one employee in Sparks, Maryland by the
late Jim Vonderhorst. Over the years, the business has grown
and now employs 24 full-time employees. This world class manufacturer
of labeling and inserting machines has numerous Fortune 100 businesses
in its customer base.
EPI, as they
are known in the marketplace, specializes in design, manufacturing
and distributing of labeling and inserting systems. In addition
to selling the labeling and/or inserting machines to other companies,
EPI also has a leasing program for its products. Some of the applications
of EPI’s products include labeling on cartons and/or case
packaging; labeling on flexible packages; inserting coupons, recipes,
promotions, liquid pouches, toys, cubes and other products into
consumer packages.
“Any
business in York County that has plans to build or expand their
business should start with the EDC to find out what is available
and how [YCEDC] can help. The guidance and help Kenetha Hansen
gave our Controller, Yvonne Ranieri, and myself in coordinating
the various financing packages was indispensable. Without this help
we would not have been able to accomplish everything we did in the
short period of time we had to work with. The YCEDC became an extra
leg to our business” attests Linda Fulginiti, President, Exact
Packing, Inc.
