| Rutter’s
In Manchester
Township, York, Pennsylvania, Rutter brothers, George and Bud, began
the dairy business with 20 cows and a horse-drawn wagon on the family
farm. Since 1921, Rutter’s has grown from two brothers making
local deliveries to employing 140 people at their York dairy to
market products throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New
Jersey and Virginia.
In February of 1968 the company opened its first convenience store
on Maryland Avenue in York, PA. In the 1970’s YCEDC helped
the company secure bond-financing to build several new stores. Having
access to and taking advantage of affordable financing in the company’s
early years helped Rutter’s grow to become the successful
business that it is today. “Companies need access to capital
in order to grow. Our business is very capital intensive in buildings,
land and equipment. Access to reasonable cost financing was and
continues to be a key part to our ability to grow our business which
results in job growth and tax base growth for the communities in
which we operate.” -- Scott Hartman, President of Rutter’s
Farm Stores.
There are now
51 Farm Stores throughout York, Adams, Franklin and Lancaster Counties
employing over 600 people. The company will keep expanding with
plans to grow at 3-4 new stores per year creating 75-100 jobs. Not
only does Rutter’s stimulate the economy of York and surrounding
counties through employment but they are also “Community Proud”.
They help raise money for local causes, donate food and gifts, host
school tours at the Dairy and provide fundraising programs. |
