Grants Available Under Farmers Market Development Matching Grant Program
Pennsylvania announced an earmark of $75,000 in grants to develop and expand farmers' markets. Grants of up to $10,000 are available under the Farmers Market Development Matching Grant Program for eligible farmers, nonprofit groups, local governments and businesses or associations that run farmers' markets. Each grant applicant must provide at least 10 percent of the grant amount in matching or in-kind services. Applications must be submitted to the State Department of Agriculture by February 6. For more information call 800-468-2433.
Free Money Toward Energy Assessment
PennTAP has received funding from the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to offer a limited number of grants to cover a portion of the cost of performing a pollution prevention / energy efficiency (P2/E2) assessment of manufacturing facilities. With this funding, PennTAP has established a program to distribute these funds to worthy small and medium-sized Pennsylvania manufacturing facilities. The program enables PennTAP to equally share the assessment costs of a P2/E2 assessment with the client.
If you are interested in applying for one of these grants please e-mail Warren Weaver.
E-Filing Options Expand
More small-business owners can use Pennsylvania's free electronic tax-filing service to file their personal income-tax returns this year, according to the state Department of Revenue.
2007 Economic Census
In December, more than 4 million American businesses received 2007
Economic Census forms from the U.S. Census Bureau. The economic census is
the nation's most comprehensive measure of business and industry, and is taken
every five years. Ben Bernanke has called the economic census "indispensable
to understanding America's economy." Business response is so important that it
is required by law.
Businesses should return their census forms promptly
by the February 12, 2008 due date.

Jon Roberts Addresses YCEDC Membership and Board
Jon Roberts of TIP Strategies, Inc. spoke at the YCEDC Annual Member Meeting on January 10, 2008. Mr. Roberts created the strategy behind Gateway Technical College in Madison, WI.
Mr. Roberts emphasized "Quality of Place" as one of
the most important assets a community
should market as opposed to "Quality of
Life." The rationale behind this thought
is "without the amenities and resources associated with an outward-looking
community, it will not be possible to
attract young and productive people."
Marketing a community on the basis of "quality of life reinforces the values of
the existing population" while quality of place speaks to the future, embraces
change and links directly to economic
vitality.
Recommendations included focusing
initiatives on talent, innovation and
entrepreneurship, and redevelopment
with purpose, revisiting incubators,
higher education and revitalizing the
Codorus Corridor.
